I go with the easy level -
1. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf - An author i am intimidated by and reading one of her books might alleviate that i hope!
2. The tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult. I loved "My sister's Keeper".
3. Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie - Another author, I havent been bold enough to behold.
Phew! I am stopping right here!

Actually Salman Rushdie is totally readable. Nothing esoteric at all about his writing!
To start with, you can try "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" a sweet fairy-tale he wrote for his son.
Or, you can try "Shalimar the Clown" - a fantastic tale about the downfall of Kashmir and the rise of terrorism there
Virginia Woolf - I read 'Mrs. Dalloway' but found her rather unreachable.
